Japanese for Daily Life and Work
When living in Japan, there may be times when you say “yes” without fully understanding what was said.
You may actually want to check something again.
You may want to ask a question.
You may want to take some time before giving an answer.
You may want to say clearly that something is difficult for you.
However, when you are not confident in Japanese, you may worry that asking again would be rude, that the other person might get angry, or that you might cause trouble. As a result, you may end up giving an answer without fully understanding.
At our school, we offer Japanese lessons for people from other countries and for those working in Japan, with a focus on Japanese for daily life and work.
We practice not only grammar and vocabulary, but also practical expressions that can be used in real situations.
For example:
“May I confirm that once more?”
“What does this mean?”
“May I think about it before giving my answer?”
“I’m afraid that will be difficult today.”
“May I talk with my family before deciding?”
“May I reconsider the answer I gave earlier?”
We practice these kinds of expressions according to different situations.
Learning Japanese is not only about memorizing correct sentences.
It is also about being able to check when you do not understand.
It is about being able to ask for help when you are in trouble.
It is about being able to say no when something is difficult.
It is about being able to take some time to think, even when you feel rushed.
We believe these are also important Japanese skills for living and working in Japan.
At our school, we use situations from daily life, work, school, city offices, hospitals, and other places. According to each person’s situation, we practice how to confirm, ask questions, consult someone, negotiate, take time before giving an answer, and reconsider or change an earlier answer in Japanese.
